Compact Sustainable Cabins

The EcoNeo Applies Space Habitat Design to a Compact Holiday Home

EcoNeo is a 35-square-meter summerhouse designed by SAGA Space Architects that adapts techniques developed for space habitats into sustainable residential architecture. Constructed from biogenic materials including Douglas fir, oak, birch, plywood, OSB panels, and wood-fiber insulation, the cabin is organized around a multifunctional central living area with an integrated kitchen, bathroom, storage, sauna, and dining space. Upstairs sleeping accommodations allow the home to accommodate up to six occupants while maximizing every square meter through space-efficient planning.

Developed using the studio's "Terra-Tech" design approach, the cabin combines digitally fabricated construction with low-impact materials to reduce annual carbon emissions by an estimated 80 percent compared to a typical new Danish summerhouse. Created with contributions from partners including Velux, Dinesen, GROHE, Svane Køkkenet, Velfac, and ThermoCell, the EcoNeo demonstrates how compact architecture can balance sustainability, functionality, and residential comfort.
