Indian Railways is known as one of the world's biggest and most heavily used railway networks, and the agency is now looking to add an environmentally friendly touch to its services with the introduction and trialing of a new eco-friendly train.
Dubbed the Diesel Electric Multiple Unit - DEMU for short - this eco-friendly train has six carriages whose ceilings are sheathed with photovoltaic arrays. The power generated from these panels goes towards taking care of the train's electrical systems. While the train does have a diesel component, its burden is significantly reduced by the use of a 120 Ah battery powered entirely by the sun's rays.
Ultimately, this eco-friendly train goes to show the economic and environmental benefits of embracing clean transportation technologies in highly populated, developing countries that have a massive volume of local and national transportation.
