Burnt Wood Illustrations

Artist Eben Cavanagh Rautenbach Creates Intricate Timber Artworks

The work of Eben Cavanagh Rautenbach is breathtaking for a few reasons. Namely, the intricate level at which he executes his unique style of illustrations and the tool he uses to do them. Armed with a soldering iron, he executes what has been dubbed pyrography or pyrogravure, essentially a decorative burning technique. Thankfully, his aunt introduced him to this tool. Before that day, Eben Cavanagh Rautenbach was using a lighter, nail and pair of pliers.

From dogs to trees and portraits of couples, Eben Cavanagh Rautenbach's artworks are created on a number of different wooden canvases. Born in South Africa and based in Scotland, he "describes his style influences as a mixture of his graffiti background and a wonder of nature," according to My Modern Met.
