The Druid Grove House London project by architecture and ideas studio CAN refurbishes and expands a three-bedroom terrace house in East Dulwich for a visual artist by removing a central load-bearing wall, adding a half-metre rear extension, and reorganizing the ground floor around a central antechamber that replaces a previously underused dining area. The house balances intimate domestic functions with bold spatial moves that maximize natural light through reconfigured openings and connected spaces.
The front living room uses a creamy white palette to contrast with oiled Douglas fir plywood floors, while cave-like portals conceal sliding pocket doors leading to the kitchen and dining zones with textured rough cast surfaces. The interiors blend eclectic color and custom materials that draw from surreal natural references and organic gestures to create a unified yet dynamic environment. Upper levels retain material richness and connect a main bedroom with a mezzanine space, incorporating sculptural elements and thoughtful spatial transitions.
