Humanized Waiting Pavilions

The De Wachtkamer Pavilion Reimagines Temporary Housing

The De Wachtkamer pavilion presents a modular shelter that challenges how emergency housing is perceived and experienced. Created by Anneloes de Koff and Nanne Wytze Brouwer with input from asylum residents, the structure adapts the bunk bed as its central element, turning a symbol of transience into a framework for privacy and comfort. Each module provides personal storage and acoustic balance while maintaining openness and light, emphasizing dignity within limitation. The form references an emergency tent yet transforms it through thoughtful proportion and material restraint.

The project demonstrates how participatory design can shift the conversation around displacement toward empathy and agency. Built from reclaimed materials and straightforward components, it reflects the realities of temporary life without reducing them to austerity. De Wachtkamer offers both function and reflection, redefining waiting as an act of humanity rather than neglect.
