A variety of heads-up windshield displays have been developed in recent years, but the Continental Augmented Reality Heads-Up Display or Continental AR-HUD takes things to the next level by displaying information 'on the road'. The system can superimpose information on the road where it's most relevant, such as the distance to the car in front, when to make a turn or even upcoming driving conditions.
The Continental AR-HUD takes data from the vehicle's camera and radar and combines it with digital maps and GPS information to create a model of the external view of the car as seen from the driver's point of view.
The system displays full-color graphics on the road view in a 130 cm by 60 cm high section of the driver's field of vision. The system places navigation symbols such as turns directly on drivers' field of vision so they don't have to turn away to consult a GPS device.
