These intricate facial images are skillfully created in an ongoing series entitled 'Constellation' by Kumi Yamashita.
Yamashita is a New York City-based artist with a talent for using thread in art. The artist uses a single thread to compile an entire image to complete amazing facial portraits. From afar, the images look like pencil shadings, but it's actually the intensity of the weaves that creates dark and light spots. The criss-crossing thread is held up by a slew of nails that are mounted onto the canvas.
Up close, the hair, eye lines and pupils can be seen with galvanized threads held closely together to produce a darker shading effect. Constellation is the creation of meticulous thread art and is just as stunning as Yamashita's previous light and shadow sculptures.
