The increasing disdain for single-use plastic products amongst consumers and the need for more corporate accountability is seeing brands respond with new initiatives like these compostable shopping bags from SuperValu. The supermarket has announced that starting September 9 shoppers will be able to purchase bags that are 100% compostable and reusable in a bid to eliminate plastic varieties from circulation. This initiative will eliminate 2.5 million bags from the market, while the compostable bags can be reused over and over before being recycled where they will break down in just 90 days.
Managing Director of SuperValu Martin Kelleher spoke on the new compostable shopping bags saying, "We are delighted to be the first Irish supermarket to introduce 100% reusable compostable bags in-store and will continue to explore ways of reducing plastic in innovative ways, making sure we meet our pledge to make 100% of our own brand and fresh fruit and vegetable packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.”
