Tourist-Centered Photography

The Cognition Series by Bence Bakonyi Focuses on Group Perspectives

By taking on the perspective of a distant, outside spectator, Bence Bakonyi, a photographer based in Shanghai, China, focuses on groups of people rather than individuals in his latest Cognition series. By doing so, "[i]t is not the person, but the community which appears as an individual entity: we see it moving in unity, the trace of its path, and the process through which it discovers the unknown," as written by Frank Marta Eva.

Essentially, the Cognition series follows a group of tourists discovering Chinese landmarks that the photographer himself has documented before. Yet through their eyes and movements, he (and as a result his audience) gain a new and different appreciation of such cultural sights.
