Just the title of Chris Mottalini's latest series is enough to make your heart hurt. The photographer christened his latest series, which documents three homes before their impending demolitions, 'After you left/ They took it apart.' This poignant series will definitely strike a chord if you've ever had to say goodbye to a home.
Each of the three homes are by architect Paul Rudolph, a man who's been shrouded in controversy. Beyond being heartbreaking, this series also highlights the trajectory of the modernist movement in architecture. Homes that were once considered futuristic are now disregarded as vestiges of the past.
Despite their abandonment, the houses retain their dignity and elegance, which is dutifully captured by Mottalini's lens. In fact, they stand in defiance towards their fate. Overall, Mottalini's series gives these buildings their due credit as important cultural markers, communicating frustration at their loss.
