Layered Paper Portraits

Jackie Huang Cuts and Layers Paper for Intricate Character Portraits

California-based artist Jackie Huang handcrafts character portraits strictly using layered pieces of paper. These intricate images reveal iconic characters such as Disney princesses and comic book heroes.

All of the character portraits use signifying characteristics and hints to determine who is being portrayed. Since Jackie doesn’t make or draw faces, the paper portraits rely heavily on coloring and distinguishable clues. For example, Harry Potter is represented with his iconic circular framed glasses, lighting bolt scar and messy black hair.

By laying each piece of paper in a precise position, the creative character depictions are brought to life in 3D. Some of the images incorporate watercolor backdrops or paper to add an additional element of depth.
