To increase sales during the holiday season, Modell's Sporting Goods brought several Boston Celtics players into its stores to meet with customers. By leveraging the popularity of NBA stars, Modell's holiday promotion helped to drive more customers to the store during the peak shopping season.

On December 15th and 16th, two Modell's stores in Massachusetts hosted Boston Celtics players. The players were there to meet and greet customers as they went about their holiday shopping. The retailer also ran a related promotion that gave customers 15 percent off regular-priced merchandise if they brought in a ticket stub from a recent Boston Celtics game.
