Ceiba Tree-Inspired Spiked Furniture

Gio Bierens de Haan Designs the Ceiba Series of Furniture

Swiss architect Giona Bierens de Haan has reimagined the spiked bark of the especially spikey tree dubbed the South American Ceiba tree with the Ceiba series of furniture. The new collection is part of a larger joint exhibition taking place in Geneva. The capsule is comprised of two shelves, a table, and four chairs -- each product is detailed with conical thorns that the Ceiba tree is recognized for.

Bierens de Haan spoke about the design to Dezeen stating, "The tree's striking expressiveness captivated me so completely that I stood in front of it mesmerised. Years later, when a close friend working at the Geneva Botanical Garden asked me to design a shelf, the memory of that unforgettable tree resurfaced – and the Ceiba collection was born."
