Colorful Transforming Castle Chairs

The Casul Chair is a Convertible Children's Chair

Casul Chair is a convertible children's chair designed by Irish furniture designer James Murphy that transforms into an abstract plywood castle in two simple movements. Created as the designer's university final project, the chair unfolds by opening its seat panels and rotating its legs to reveal battlements, shelves, and a play structure inspired by medieval architecture. Drawing influence from post-war transformable children's furniture, the design encourages imaginative play while functioning as an everyday seat.

It is engineered with some interlocking jigsaw joints, friction hinges, and rear buttresses; the chair prioritizes stability and child safety throughout the transformation process. Two versions were developed through play-testing with children, including a chalkboard-finished edition that allows the castle walls to be drawn on and another featuring hidden foam swords and shield cushions beneath the seat.
