John Lewis Repurposes its Car Parks Store Into Residential Units

John Lewis revealed its plans to repurpose its Car Parks department store into rental housing. The transformation will occur across the UK, thereby converting the department retailer into a residential landlord. Over the next decade, the conversion will include approximately 10,000 John Lewis homes on the company's former retail sites.

The company's plans to enter the rental housing market is a direct response to the nation's housing shortage and draws on its own "social purpose." John Lewis's effort to help address Britain's housing shortage also aims to revive its fortunes following the impact of the Corona Virus Pandemic and the company's growing competition from online rivals. Thus far, transformation plans will occur on existing sites; however, the company said some homes would also be built on new sites beginning in 2022.
