Propellerless Boat Motors

This Motor Uses An Undulating Membrane Inspired By Dolphins & Jellyfish

FinX has developed an innovative outboard boat motor that is designed to mimic the seemingly effortless and wonderfully streamlined manner in which marine creatures such as jellyfish and dolphins manage to move through the ocean.

The 'FinS' outboard motor manages this unique form of movement by eschewing the ubiquitous propeller and instead making use of a special membrane that is powered by an electric motor. The ring-shaped membrane is capable of undulating through the water, which results in the vessel being gently thrust forward in an efficient manner that produces very little noise and is therefore less disturbing to the natural behavioral patterns of marine life.

The 'FinS' comes with a 48-volt lithium battery that allows it to attain a maximum speed just under 11 km/h, and is available for a price of around $3475.
