Australia's Bendigo Marketplace Hosts Hi-Tech Family Scavenger Hunts

Australia's Bendigo Marketplace may be keeping up with the times by incorporating Bluetooth technology and beacon apps like HelloLocal into its shopping center, but the masses seem reluctant to get on board. In order to increase interactivity, the marketplace set up a smartphone treasure hunt as a fun family activity to encourage engagement with the new technology.

Over the course of seven days during a school holiday, families were equipped with treasure maps, eyepatches and the HelloLocal app, which would lead them to clues and fun-filled locations like ice rinks and Lego World. Through Bluetooth technology and beacons, participants were notified via phone when they were in proximity to a noteworthy location. As well as ultimately leading families to great prize packs, this digital treasure hunt was a great way to encourage visits to the mall and app downloads for future use.
