The Arc gymnasium is an extension of the Green School's campus in Bali. While bamboo-based architecture is commonly found across the country, the Arc's unique design is the first of its kind. Designed by Ibuku, the sustainably designed structure features a complex double-curved roof made entirely from bamboo.
Built from intersecting 14-meter tall bamboo arches that span 19 meters, anticlastic grid shells interconnect the roof. The strength comes from the grid shell's curves. The arches on the building work with a compression force held by the tension from the anticlastic grid shells. So while the grid shells appear to be hanging from the arches, they actually work to hold them up. Boasting 760 square meters, the unique bamboo structure is a multipurpose sports court.
