Mental Health Monitoring Systems

Apple is Developing a Way to Detect Mental and Cognitive Decline

Apple is currently working on new ways to detect cognitive decline and mental health conditions by using Apple phones and watches. The tech giant is working with researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, to study anxiety, depression, and stress by tracking Apple Watch and iPhone data belonging to 3,000 volunteers.

The researchers are comparing the data captured using the Apple Watch and iPhone sensors to questionnaires manually filled out by participants. The research is also testing the stress hormone cortisol found in the participants' hair follicles. Apple has also partnered with the pharmaceutical company Biogen to study the cognitive development of Alzheimer's.

The hope is to create a feature that can detect an Apple user's degrading and cognitive health and subsequently warn the user of the findings. If the pilot proves successful, this new system could revolutionize how society diagnoses mental and cognitive conditions.
