United Airlines' App Now Includes a Beacon-Powered Airport Map

Before experiencing the enjoyment of encountering new cities, states and countries, travelers must successfully conquer airport navigation. To make this task a bit easier for travelers, United Airlines updated its iOS app to include detailed indoor airport maps.

The maps are comparable to Google's Street View, and show exactly how far it is to the food court, or estimate that it's about a seven-minute walk to a traveler's designated gate.

As it stands, beacon technology is now being tested at the terminal with these apps for the purposes of creating personalized experiences and better positioning estimates. Since the framework is already in place, in the future, it's anticipated that beacons could be used to collect location information and lead highly customized experiences throughout the terminals.
