Agnes Toth paintings are distinctive as they pride themselves on giving off an almost unfinished and partially complete look. Toth’s creatively crafted canvases only contain bits and pieces of the subject matter, leaving the rest up to you to fill out. These paintings look as though they were once complete, but with time have now lost or hidden specific parts. The parts that are painted resemble torn pieces of paper that seem to float in the negative space of the painting.
This whole process is a spontaneous and constantly updated one. The artist's paintings are built from individual patches, some of which are connected to form a more complete work, and others that are simply left fractured and ripped apart. These oil paintings are created using an extremely thin layer of paint and are constructed so that marks from the brush are not visible and the painting remains seamless.
