Skyroot Aerospace launched its Vikram-1 orbital rocket, becoming the first private Indian company to place a payload into low Earth orbit. The July 18 test flight carried a 350-kilogram payload and demonstrated an architecture designed for dedicated small-satellite missions, positioning the vehicle for commercial service.
The company plans to begin commercial operations in 2027, targeting one flight per month after completing another test later this year. Founders and former ISRO engineers Naga Bharath Daka and Pawan Kumar Chandana emphasized a resource-efficient development strategy, with longer-term plans to explore reusable rockets. Skyroot will compete in the sub-1,000-kilogram launch market alongside providers such as Rocket Lab and Firefly Aerospace.
