Grocery Store-Led Plastic Bans

Whole Foods Has Announced It Will Reduce Single-Use Plastics

As consumers put more pressure on corporations to take action against single-use plastic, one grocery store stands out: Whole Foods. This change will be implemented by July 2019 and it is the first grocery store in North America to take a stand against single-use plastics. Whole Foods estimates that over 800,000 pounds of plastic will be reduced annually and plastic packaging is expected to decrease by as much as 70%.

Whole Foods has already led the eco-friendly movement for retailers. It was the first grocery store in the U.S. to eliminate single-use plastic bags at checkout. Much of the packaging provided by the store is already environmentally friendly, including the Prepared Foods take-away products that use 100% commercially compostable material. This announcement is in the wake of Trader Joe's vow to reduce 1 million pounds of plastic waste per year.

With consumers becoming more conscious of their environmental footprint, it is no wonder retailers are responding by providing more sustainable options.
