Archival Floor Lamps

The 1953 Floor Lamp Returns to Production with Archival Fidelity

The 1953 Floor Lamp was conceived for Philip Johnson’s Glass House and is now reissued for contemporary interiors. Lighting designer Richard Kelly solved the challenge of a transparent room by directing light upward from a low source to create a gentle ambient glow. The conical shade softened brightness while preserving views, allowing the architecture to remain the focus. The result delivers illumination that feels calm and evenly distributed.

The revival continues the original proportions and intent while refining construction for long term use. A stainless steel body and careful detailing maintain the crisp silhouette and the restrained character of the piece. Support from The Glass House and the Richard Kelly Estate anchors the project in research, ensuring fidelity to the designer’s method. The lamp suits living rooms, galleries, and contemplative spaces where soft luminance is preferred, showing how placement and shielding can cultivate atmosphere.
