Schack Arkitektur’s new conversion of a 300-year-old barn in Denmark turns the historic agricultural structure into a dedicated art studio for painter Michael Kvium. The project preserves the barn’s original timber frame while adapting the interior to accommodate large-scale art production. The studio is sized to allow the artist to work simultaneously on multiple expansive canvases, some reaching up to 20 metres in length, reflecting functional requirements for substantial floor area and vertical clearance. Structural interventions maintain the barn’s heritage character while integrating building upgrades to support continuous use as a workspace.
The design retains the barn’s simple external form and traditional construction logic, with interior spatial reorganisation allowing for open circulation and flexible work zones. Large openings and daylighting strategies are included to ensure even natural illumination throughout the studio.
