Atelier Apeiron Creates the Hengqin Culture and Art Complex

Architecture firm Atelier Apeiron has completed the design of the Hengqin Culture and Art Complex, which is located in Zhuhai, China. The space features a library, museum, and theater under the roof, which also has a terraced roof garden. One of the most defining features of the space is the arched detail of the building supporting the stacked roof with three platforms.

The lead architect at the firm, Yunchao Xu explains, "Arches have been embraced as a critical form of architecture since the beginning of time and are prevalent in both eastern and western culture. To create strong structures with available materials, arches have been used to convert shear force in a horizontal direction into vertical force, ensuring that all points of the structure carry a shared load."
