Design Continuum by Villeroy & Boch Explores Perception

The Design Continuum installation by Villeroy & Boch Group and Ideal Standard is presented at Milan Design Week 2026 as a transformation of the brand’s Milan showroom into a multisensory environment. Developed with creative studio Elastique, the project uses light, projections, textures, and scent to construct an immersive sequence of spaces. The installation reframes the bathroom as a spatial experience shaped through atmosphere and material rather than fixed product display.

The exhibition is organized into five distinct environments, each functioning as a separate study of material, perception, and spatial interaction. Surfaces respond to changing light, textures invite touch, and transitions between rooms guide movement through the installation. Elements are presented in a "ready-made" state, exposing fragments of process and experimentation instead of finished compositions. The project brings together Villeroy & Boch’s heritage-driven design approach with Ideal Standard’s contemporary direction.

Trend Themes

  1. Multisensory Retail Experiences — Retail environments increasingly combine light, sound, scent, and texture to turn product discovery into immersive, memory-forming encounters.
  2. Material-driven Spatial Design — Designs that foreground surfaces and tactile contrasts are redefining space perception by prioritizing atmosphere over discrete product boundaries.
  3. Process-transparent Presentation — Exposing prototypes, fragments, and methods within displays is shifting consumer interest toward creative narratives and authenticity rather than polished final goods.

Industry Implications

  1. Bathroom Fixtures — Bathroom brands can move beyond catalog sales as fixtures become components of curated sensory environments that redefine how consumers evaluate value.
  2. Experiential Design Agencies — Creative studios specializing in multisensory installations are positioned to blend storytelling, technology, and material research into novel client offerings.
  3. Hospitality and Showrooms — Hotels and branded showrooms are adapting atmospheric, tactile staging to transform functional spaces into immersive experiences that influence guest perception and loyalty.
