Mortlach Single Malt Scotch Whisky, a treasure of Scotland’s iconic Speyside region, has partnered with American glass artist Deborah Czeresko on a new commissioned pipette for the next iteration of the Mortlach By Design program. Mortlach by Design celebrates the unique characteristics of Mortlach whisky and brings together some of the world’s best designers to create bespoke products for the ultimate whisky experience. Czeresko’s piece, titled Morphic, is the latest in the ongoing series of international design collaborations inspired by Mortlach’s heritage, philosophy, and powerful character, with the design allowing for a precise drop of water to be added to the liquid to open up the spirit’s aroma.
Now in its fourth year, Mortlach’s design collaboration program celebrates the brand’s long-standing commitment to craftsmanship and culture. As a patron of contemporary design, Mortlach partners with bold, visionary artists to reinterpret the experience of whisky through objects that reflect the brand’s own defiant spirit and commitment to mastery with edge. Known for their expressive practice, Czeresko’s talent with glass made them a perfect partner for this project. They created Morphic as a sculptural hand-blown pipette for the ritual of adding water to whisky, an object that transforms an everyday act into an intentional ritual. Rendered in clear glass with copper leaf detailing, Morphic embraces fluidity, form, and unapologetic boldness, challenging glassblowing’s mastery-driven traditions, which prioritize dominance and control over material.
Rejection of the traditional unites this pipette with the 200-year-old Mortlach Distillery. Czeresko challenges glassblowing’s mastery-driven aesthetics, systems that prioritize dominance and control over form, just as the Cowies once challenged the rigid conventions of whisky distillation. Like Mortlach’s iconic six stills, Czeresko plays with copper: embedding copper leaf into molten glass causes each pipette to react unpredictably, making every piece a one-of-a-kind expression of strength, complexity, and transformation. Fine glass techniques have been added to the head of the pipette to showcase the breadth of Czeresko’s technical mastery and artistic range, an ornamental flourish that deepens the sculptural language of the work.
Morphic is tactile, interactive, and meant to be enjoyed, an everyday gesture made a little more intentional. Its bold, finger-like protrusions and textured surface disrupt the expectation of polished perfection, embodying Mortlach’s defiance of tradition and making every pour an experience of craftsmanship, innovation, and rebellion.
