The Counter-Slope House Steps into a Wooded Slope in Quebec

Counter-Slope House is a 4,530-square-foot residence designed by yh2 Architecture in Potton, Quebec. Completed in 2024, the home occupies a steep site along the southern shore of Lake Memphremagog. The design is organized into two volumes that follow the natural contours of the terrain, reducing the need for extensive land modification.

Dual-pitched roofs sit above each section and contribute to the building's low profile within the surrounding woodland landscape. A dense treeline separates the residence from the lake and shapes the views available from the interior.

Weathered cedar clads the exterior and helps the structure blend into its forested setting. Inside, white oak surfaces and exposed timber elements define the material palette. Windows are positioned to capture filtered views of the lake through the trees rather than direct panoramas across the water.

Trend Themes

  1. Contour-integrated Homes — Terrain-following residential forms signal a market for hillside dwellings that preserve natural slopes while offering premium spatial experiences.
  2. Low-impact Luxury — Luxury housing is shifting toward understated designs where reduced excavation, subdued silhouettes, and natural materials become markers of environmental sophistication.
  3. Filtered-view Design — Window strategies that frame partial, tree-filtered scenery introduce new value in privacy-focused homes that prioritize atmosphere over expansive panoramas.

Industry Implications

  1. Residential Architecture — Architectural firms are finding differentiation in site-responsive homes that use terrain, rooflines, and massing to minimize disruption on complex landscapes.
  2. Sustainable Building Materials — Weathered cedar, white oak, and exposed timber point to growing demand for material systems that blend durability, carbon-conscious construction, and biophilic aesthetics.
  3. Luxury Real Estate — High-end property markets are increasingly shaped by secluded, nature-embedded residences where ecological restraint and quiet views enhance exclusivity.
