Zooco Estudio Designs a Restaurant in the Cantabrian Maritime Museum

Madris-based design studio Zooco Estudio creates a restaurant nestled in the Cantabrian Maritime Museum located in Santander, Spain. The main design language of the dining space honors a brutalist theme through its architecture. It is set in a vaulted space of concrete paraboloids that were found during the renovation project.

The slatted timber up top makes up the ceiling and also honors the location's heritage of shipbuilding. Views from the restaurant overlook the Santander Bay waters as it is on the second floor of the museum. The aforementioned paraboloids are an original part of the structure and supported the roof, which was the museum's patio prior.

Javier Guzmán, co-founder of Zooco Estudio explains to Dezeen, "In 2003, the building was renovated and as part of this intervention, the paraboloids were covered with a new roof and the space between them and the perimeter of the building was closed with glass, generating a covered space where there was previously a terrace. We wanted the concrete paraboloids to be the absolute protagonists of the space and by removing the paint and the coating, the paraboloids are visible again and regain their full prominence."
