Ready for a lesson in shock culture? The gallery features a range of global innovations in “extreme culture,” giving you insight into the different ways in which adrenaline junkies from around the world get their fix. These acts range from consuming potentially lethal foods to engaging in dangerous extreme sports. To other people, extreme can mean spending obscene amounts of money on ultra luxury getaways, and for others it means getting over-the-top tattoos and piercings; everyone has their own ideas when they’re looking for a rush.

The listed foods, for example, are actually consumed around the world, some still avoided by locals, but the majority eaten as mainstream dietary delicacies. In Asia, for example, eating jelly fish isn’t that bizarre, so jelly fish ice cream really only shocks those in the west. Blow fish, on the other hand, is considered an “extreme” food even in Japan, from which the fish are harvested.
