The top September 2016 eco design ideas explore a range of concepts for helping consumers from all walks of life tread lightly upon the earth, while also helping them connect more deeply to its beauty and benefits in their daily lives.

In terms of architecture, ideas that embrace nature to the fullest include floating island homes in Clayoquot Sound, British Columbia, building materials sourced from volcanic stone and the Nashare Hotel, which was built around prominent natural rocks. In Thailand, 'The Thailine' is being constructed as an urban green space under a highway and is reminiscent of NYC's own Highline.

Other standout earth-connected ideas include compostable lip balm packaging tubes, textiles made from fungi and the Nalo speaker system, which features a bulb-shaped design that requires planting in soil.
