From the Gulf Oil Spill to Oil-Absorbing Mats

The Gulf oil spill has dominated the news this week, and awareness of the environmental dangers crude oil presents has never been higher. These innovations take our obsession with oil to new heights, from crude barrel necklaces emblazoned with the price of oil to oil-absorbing hair mats that are made from old salon hair clippings.

Implications - Addressing serious issues in a way that can be observed and understood by the mass population is a difficult task. Charitable organizations and ad agencies face this dilemma daily, often walking a fine line between what's appropriate and what isn't. For some issues, such as the Gulf Oil Spill, there is no delicate way to discuss the problem, which is when a crude, harsh approach is probably the most effective.
