In this desire driven relationship keynote by Esther Perel, she explores the dynamics of love, romance and desire and tries to unlock the key to maintaining desire throughout a long term relationship.
Perel points out that this is the first time in human history that we want sex for the purpose of pleasure and connection that is rooted not in utility (having children) but in desire. The challenge comes with trying to sustain the desire felt at the beginning of a relationship throughout its entirety.
Perel asserts that in order to maintain desire in a long term relationship, we must reconcile two fundamental human needs: security and adventure. She likens security to things like permanence, reliability and other needs that provide us with a sense of home and belonging. Perel likens adventure to risk and mystery, asserting this is an equally strong need in humans. The key to maintaining desire in a long term relationship is harnessing and reconciling these two needs.
