Low birth weight is a leading cause of infant mortality in many parts of the world, so the Women First supplement has been created to help prevent it from being an issue for mothers. The supplement was created at the Maryland-based Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and consists mostly of dried skimmed milk along with peanut and soybean extracts. The smooth supplement is then enhanced with additional minerals and vitamins to help support infants during the gestation period.
The Women First supplement was tested during a field trial that took place in India, Pakistan, Guatemala and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which saw a marked drop of infant size issues.
