Within by Glenys Barton, a British artist based in Essex, United Kingdom, is a poetic sculpture of a human head. Although the serene expression carved into the outer surface of the sculpture is captivating enough, it is purposely split in half to reveal more carvings within. As though portraying modern hieroglyphs, the inner carvings are made up of countless miniature human forms that appear to depict the thoughts of the person portrayed.

Made out of bronze, Within by Glenys Barton reaches about two and a half feet high. According by a pamphlet for her latest exhibition in London, Ontario, "The outer calm of the immaculate features contrasts with the inner activity, a metaphor for stresses within the mind that are more often than not at odds with the way in which the self presents to the world."
