The Whale Writer is a foldable DIY writerdeck that combines 3D-printed components with off-the-shelf electronics to create a compact distraction-free writing platform. The device folds flat for transport and integrates a repurposed Bluetooth keyboard inside a custom chassis with a print-in-place hinge. A reflective Waveshare RLCD serves as the display, using ambient light instead of a backlight for paper-like readability while incorporating an ESP32-S3 microcontroller directly into the screen module.
The build consists of four primary 3D-printed parts, including the base, keyboard plate, battery cover, and display bezel. Power is supplied by an 18650 battery, with builders able to choose between separate battery systems or a single-cell configuration powering both the display and keyboard. The open-source project functions as a customizable hardware platform rather than a finished product.

What Makes This Trend Stand Out
- Foldable Productivity Hardware
- Compact devices that transform from flat transport modes into focused workstations create white space for portable tools that prioritize intentional use over general-purpose computing.
- Ambient-light Displays
- Reflective screens that rely on surrounding light point to lower-power product categories with paper-like readability for writing, education, and outdoor work environments.
- Open-source Maker Devices
- Community-built hardware platforms with 3D-printed parts and modular electronics expand the market for customizable personal technology beyond mass-produced finished products.
Sectors Adopting This
- Consumer Electronics
- Portable distraction-free devices introduce alternative computing formats that sit between laptops, tablets, and e-readers for niche productivity use cases.
- Additive Manufacturing
- 3D-printed chassis systems and print-in-place hinges show how small-batch device production can reduce tooling barriers for experimental hardware designs.
- Publishing and Writing Tools
- Dedicated writing platforms signal demand for digital creation environments that minimize interruptions while preserving portability and long battery life.
