Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore have developed a special membrane water filter system that can produce safe drinking water by filtering out nano-particles and destroying E. coli bacteria.
The membrane in question was developed by mixing two different polymers that have selective separation properties that allow them to form a nano-porous membrane, which effectively filters water by getting rid of harmful bacteria and other miniscule and unwanted materials.
The end result is an effective water filter system that both separates bacteria while also lasting for a long period of time.
Polluted and otherwise unsafe drinking water is a problem in underdeveloped parts of India as well as in many other regions of the world, so this kind of technological breakthrough is very welcome.
