18 Designers Conceptualized Walking Sticks for the Future Selves

Once viewed as symbols of frailty or dependence, walking sticks are undergoing a redesign to embody empowerment, supporting individuals to live more confidently, vibrantly and actively as they age. As part of an exhibition curated by Japanese designer Keiji Takeuchi at the Triennale Milano for Milan Design Week, 18 designers created walking sticks with their future selves in mind.

While some designers focused on enhanced functionality, others added glamour and whimsy to their walking sticks. Designers Anker Bak and Maddalena Casadei integrated metal brackets so that their canes could be secured to tables, and Hugo Passos created a design with an integrated wicker basket for collecting fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden.

With height-adjustable and self-righting features, these walking sticks prove that reliable support doesn't have to come at the cost of personality.
