Swedish plant-based food tech start-up Hooked is disrupting the industry in Europe with a shredded vegan salmon product. Pegged as first-of-its-kind, the innovation is sustainable, healthy, as well as cruelty- and toxin-free.
The main ingredient of the vegan salmon is soy protein. The formulation of the innovation calls for seaweed and algae oil which deliver Omega-3 fatty acids to the body. Hooked uses a wet extrusion process to achieve an edible result. In addition to the vegan salmon, the Stockholm-based start-up is also releasing a tuna alternative and is planning to develop plant-based alternatives for calamari and shrimp.
The move toward vegan seafood comes from a worry that by 2050, there will be a little to no seafood left available in the ocean.
