Uchida Shoten Office is a renovated office interior designed by Schemata Architects for a publishing company in Tokyo. The project updates an existing workplace to support editorial, administrative, and collaborative activities within a compact footprint. The layout is organized into a series of spatial zones rather than a single open plan, with individual desks arranged alongside shared worktables and meeting areas. Circulation routes are woven between these zones to allow movement without fixed partitions. Existing structural elements, including concrete columns and ceiling slabs, are retained and integrated into the new layout.
Custom furniture and shelving units are designed specifically for the space, providing storage, display, and work surfaces in a unified system. Materials include exposed concrete, wood finishes, and metal detailing used consistently throughout the interior. Lighting is incorporated into shelving and ceiling planes to provide both ambient and task illumination. The renovation adapts the office to contemporary working patterns while maintaining continuity with the building’s original structure.
