Uchida Shoten Office is a Renovated Workplace Designed by Schemata Architects

— January 19, 2026 — Art & Design
Uchida Shoten Office is the renovated interior of a publishing company’s workplace in Tokyo designed by Schemata Architects. The project reorganises an existing office plan to support a variety of activities including individual work, meetings, and informal gatherings.

The layout establishes a sequence of distinct zones rather than a single open space, with workstations positioned along one side and collaborative areas and circulation paths on the other. Material choices include exposed concrete, timber shelving, and integrated joinery that provides storage and display without introducing additional partition elements. Lighting is integrated into ceiling planes and shelving units to deliver both ambient and task illumination across the interior.

Schemata Architects developed bespoke furniture and shelving calibrated to the dimensions of the existing space and its structural grid. Original structural columns and ceiling slabs were retained where possible and combined with new insertions to balance material continuity and updated functionality. The renovated interior accommodates editorial, administrative, and collaborative functions within the company’s Tokyo headquarters while maintaining a simple material palette and clear spatial organisation.
