These Tuomas Markunpoika Tolvanen furnishings are creatively functional. Inspired by his grandmother’s struggle with Alzheimer's, the Design Academy Eindhoven graduate aims to create furniture pieces that possess a strong sense of memory.
The designer takes ordinary furniture pieces and coats them with steel. He then burns the pieces leaving only their ornate steel shell.
A fan of simplicity and function, the designer takes design cues from the past stating that "a home-made object should only possess its bare essentials and fulfill its duty or purpose." These Tuomas Markunpoika Tolvanen furniture designs are constructed using an age-old technique that mixes steel and fire. Fusing aesthetics with function, these eclectic designs reference the past with their subtle ornamentation and eroded patina developed during the metal burning process.
