Scaffold Clip Seating

THING_04 by Konstantin Grcic Clips onto Scaffolding to Create Public Seats

THING_04 by Konstantin Grcic is a modular seating object designed to attach directly onto standard scaffolding poles, turning existing structures into usable seating without permanent installation. Developed under his 25kg label, the seat is a rotationally moulded polypropylene disc that clamps onto poles using steel hardware, requiring no tools or floor anchoring. The design measures approximately 33 by 33 by 12 centimetres and weighs around 2.1 kilograms, making it portable and easy to reposition.

The stealthy seating system extends much more beyond a single seat, with variations including freestanding frames and modular configurations for larger installations. Versions such as THING_04.u introduce a standalone steel structure, while THING_04.x expands into scalable arrangements suited for events or public spaces. The seat is priced at €98 and is produced in Germany using post-industrial polypropylene.

Modular Clip-on Urban Seating
A system of portable seats that clamp onto existing scaffolding presents a new category of non-permanent street furniture that can rapidly transform underused urban structures into programmed social zones.
Temporary Infrastructure Activation
Pop-up activation of construction scaffolding and other temporary structures provides opportunities to layer civic amenities onto transient sites, creating multifunctional use during redevelopment cycles.
Lightweight Reconfigurable Public Furniture
Durable, low-mass seating components made from recycled polypropylene enable fleets of movable furnishings that can be quickly redeployed for events, emergencies, or seasonal programming.

Where This Applies

Event Management
Portable clamp-on seating allows large-scale events to densify seating without permanent infrastructure, creating cost-effective solutions for variable-capacity venues.
Urban Planning and Public Works
Municipal programs could incorporate detachable seating systems as interim placemaking tools during construction, shifting how public space is activated and maintained.
Outdoor Furniture Manufacturing
Manufacturers focusing on injection-moulded polymers and modular joinery could develop standardized clip-on components that expand product lines into adaptive, scaffold-compatible furnishings.
