Architecture firm Studio Libeskind finishes The Atrium at Sumner Houses, which is an affordable housing block in Brooklyn, New York. The space features 190 apartments and they are meant to securely house seniors in the area as it is right int he middle of the city's Housing Authority's Sumner Houses. The block wraps around a central atrium, which is how it got its namesake.
Daniel Libeskind, who is the founder of the studio had also personally lived in the housing cooperative during his youth in the 50s and 60s. He explains, "Growing up in social housing in the Bronx gave me a unique perspective on the importance of community and high-quality, affordable housing. I took this insight to task when designing The Atrium at Sumner Houses; I wanted to create a place that felt like home to the residents. I hope this project serves as a powerful example of how good design can positively impact society, especially for those in need."
