Emergency Shelter Homes

The 48-Sq-Ft Model is a Towable Emergency Shelter

The 48-sq-ft model is a towable emergency shelter developed by Canadian builder and charity Tiny Tiny Homes to provide temporary accommodation for people experiencing homelessness. Built on a single-axle trailer, the compact dwelling measures 48 square feet and features insulated metal panel construction with a folding entrance deck that retracts during transport. The single-room interior includes a bed, a daybed with under-bed storage, additional cabinetry and a skylight that introduces natural light into the living space.

The shelter is equipped with an electric heater and an optional window-mounted air conditioning unit to support year-round use in different climates. The design excludes a kitchen and bathroom because it is intended to operate alongside shared communal facilities and support services. A pair of the shelters has been installed at the Seeds of Hope Farm Project in Toronto as part of a transitional housing initiative.

Towable Micro-shelters
Compact trailer-based dwellings create flexible temporary housing models that can be rapidly relocated across communities facing homelessness, disaster displacement or seasonal shelter shortages.
Service-linked Housing
Shelters designed without private kitchens or bathrooms reflect a shift toward modular living units integrated with shared facilities, social services and community support infrastructure.
Climate-ready Minimalism
Insulated construction, electric heating and optional cooling in ultra-small spaces point to affordable shelter formats suited for year-round deployment in varied climates.

Sectors Adopting This

Affordable Housing
Low-cost micro-units introduce scalable alternatives for transitional accommodation where conventional housing development is too slow, expensive or land-intensive.
Disaster Relief
Portable emergency shelters offer response agencies adaptable infrastructure for temporary lodging after floods, fires, extreme weather events and other displacement crises.
Modular Construction
Tiny towable structures expand the market for prefabricated building systems that prioritize speed, transportability and simplified installation over permanent foundations.
