Nightpeak Energy expanded its Bocanova storage site in Southeast Texas with Bocanova 2, a phase that increased capacity to 300 MW and added fast-response capacity for the ERCOT power market and its growing data center and large-load demand. It also reached financial close, and commercial operations began on September 17 in Brazoria County near Houston.
Bocanova 2 is a 150 MW system with a two-hour discharge window. It uses Tesla Megapack 2 XL units to shift power as grid conditions change. Bocanova 1 entered service in August 2025, enabling this second phase at the same site.
At 300 MW in one Brazoria County location, the site serves as infrastructure for companies bringing major loads onto the Texas grid, not just a backup resource. Its long-term offtake structure also makes storage easier to finance, widening the model for other fast-growing load centers.

Why This Trend Is Growing
- Grid-scale Battery Hubs
- Large co-located storage sites are becoming strategic power infrastructure for regions absorbing rapid industrial and digital load growth.
- Data Center Power Demand
- Rising computing infrastructure needs are reshaping storage economics by creating dependable demand for fast-response energy capacity.
- Financed Storage Offtake
- Long-term offtake agreements are reducing revenue uncertainty and making utility-scale battery projects more bankable in volatile power markets.
Industries Being Reshaped
- Energy Storage
- High-capacity battery systems paired with flexible discharge capabilities are expanding the role of storage beyond backup power into grid balancing.
- Renewable Energy
- Intermittent generation gains stronger market value when paired with batteries that shift output to periods of higher grid stress.
- Data Infrastructure
- Power-intensive facilities are influencing grid investment patterns as operators seek reliable capacity near major load centers.
