AI-Enhanced Phone-Free Devices

Terra AI is a Compass Device by Modem Works and Panter & Tourron

Design studios Modem Works and Panter & Tourron work in collaboration to create the Terra AI device. It is defined by a gorp-core aesthetic and helps users go on walks safely without their phones. The compact device guides users along a walking route using haptic feedback, following an arrow emblem like a compass. These routes are generated by AI based on the user's prompts. This creates a closer connection with nature, defined as a 'non-device' that allows users to head out without any digital distractions.

Panterotto explains to Dezeen, "In our physical design, we aimed to adopt a radical approach within the tech world. Moving away from the classic sleek and polished aesthetic, we embraced the great outdoors and the broader gorpcore aesthetic, as well as the visual language of New Age culture. This marks a departure from the familiar look and feel we've become accustomed to with companies like Apple. Our goal was a design that is both functional and meditative, similar to a fidget device – a product you can hold and play with for relaxation."
