With a name like Synergistic Synthesis XVII Sub b 1 Chair, you'd think this seat was destined for regal things. In fact, the chair, designed by Kenneth Smythe, sold at an auction for $3,125, a sum that exceeded the estimated price.
Made from birch laminate, colored formica, leather, acrylic, foam rubber, steel and maple dowels, this futuristic office chair is every bit as complicated as it looks. Smythe, a designer, artist and scientist based in San Francisco, is inspired by evolutionary models of nature.
