Rachel Baran's Surrealist Pictures Reveal a Subconscious

Ohio-based college graduate Rachel Baran explores the subconscious using her surrealist pictures of the body.

Several of Baran's photographs depict the body undergoing extreme physical hardship; for instance, one image shows two severed fingers that snap off to reveal concrete, not blood, under the skin, while another shot features hands that are irreversibly clasped. the skin fused together with skin webs. Whether the images are revealing a subconscious sense of anxiety, dread or panic about the body is not confirmed; however, it seems rather likely, considering the acute physical duress and punishment in the photos, that Baran is attempting to make a comment on internalized self-hatred or the complexity of our body image.

One needs not necessarily comprehend Baran's photos in a logical sense to form an emotional attachment or understanding of them.
